Books play a central role for Filarete and his Libro architettonico. In the
course of the fictional story, a Libro di Bronzo and a Libro d’Oro are
mentioned several times, which can be regarded as self-reflexive
commentaries on Filarete and the act of writing his text. The Libro di
Bronzo is used as a symbol for Filarete’s artistic virtue. In this context,
the famous statue of Virtue on top of the House of Virtue and Vice is
reinterpreted as a goal for the three social estates consisting of the men
of arms, men of letters, and artisans. In addition, it becomes a hidden
symbol for Francesco Sforza. By contrast, the Libro d’Oro, with the
allegory of a woman in a vase and two small children on the binding –
which can be interpreted as Memory, Genius and Intellect – suggests the
topic of the process of artistic thinking against the background of divine
creation and the concept of man as an image of God. Overall, it becomes
clear that Filarete’s Libro architettonico owes a great deal not only to
antique sources, but also to the late medieval tradition of architectural
fiction. Filarete’s Libro thus cannot be understood exclusively in the
context of architectural treatises; rather, it also serves – in the guise of
a manual of architectural teaching and knowledge – as a manual of
statecraft and virtue, with an educational and exemplary function, and
as a draft of an ideal society.
